Posterous Spaces

Posterous, the simple blogging platform which has been around since 2008 has just launched Posterous Spaces which looks like a full social network. Spaces brings together sites and groups in a new look focusing on sharing, social networking and content discovery. It is designed to help people easily share photos and videos, for private sharing. You can use Spaces as an iPhone app, on their website or via email. This makes Posterous less competitive with blogging platforms such as Tumblr, but more with services like Path. Watch the very American video below or find out more here.

Oscar de la Renta crowdsources live on Tumblr

It’s fashion season again and American designer Oscar de la Renta is making a splash with the help of photo hungry fashion bloggers. Yesterday, during his Spring 2012 collection at New York Fashion week he used Tumblr to livestream the show using the tag #odlrlive in real-time, generating live show coverage from editors, bloggers and models who all uploaded images to the social platform. This has set Oscar de la Renta’s online show apart from every other livestream this season, involving the brand’s offline and online audience in a unique record of the event.

Yesterday, Twitter announced a new tool which tracks how much traffic your website receives from the social platform. It will help people understand three major things: the amount their content is being shared on Twitter, how much traffic Twitter is sending to their site and the performance of Tweet buttons. The tool is free and in beta stages. Coming to you soon.

Weekly Social Media Update

Riots and social media

After a week of violent riots across the country, initially sparked by the police shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, north London, the use of social media, especially Facebook, Twitter and BlackBerry have come under attack. The use of these services to organise the riots, particularly in London have caused the government and the police to question whether social media can be ‘shut down’ when riots such as these strike. This confirms the government’s little of understanding of the ways in which these global platforms are used and how damaging ‘censoring’ social media could be. We have learnt from the anti-government demonstrations in Egypt earlier this year that shutting down networks such as Vodafone have only led to wide criticism. Let’s see how the debate unfolds.

They have been posting pictures of jam sessions, home-made instruments and some tracks. Follow the project here and get social for a good cause.

It doesn’t look like Photovine will be integrated with Google+, more an independent product. Keep an eye out for further news on Google’s latest tease.
